I employed aerial photos in 1947 of the Kowloon Peninsula for reference. This set of photos were taken during the first large-scale aerial survey by the colonial government after WWII, as part of the plan to rebuild the city in the post-war period. Here reveals the symbolic meaning of picturing this imagery at this point of time. I also made reference to the satellite map in 2021 of the same area, where 40% of the Hong Kong population resides.
Map is a visual record of history, the man-and-place relationship. The idea of transforming local maps into abstract painting is not only to build up a connection between history and contemporary art but to manifest my affection to my hometown. By reconstructing our collective memories, we could anticipate the best possibilities of the future.
